 Mohawk Valley Medical Associates, Inc. was founded in Schenectady, New York in 1983 as an Independent Practice Association (IPA), by a small group of community-minded physicians. The goal was to lay the groundwork for a local, Schenectady-based HMO in response to market pressures both in the Capital District and beyond.  MVMA has grown to over 2400 physicians in 9 counties in New York State.  Many of our “founding fathers” from those beginning years remain actively involved.  The fundamental principle of the IPA is representation by physicians, for physicians , through a single, cohesive organization. 

What We Do

MVMA provides the physician network in our geographic area to deliver care to MVP Health Care members.

     MVMA and MVP Health Care (MVP) are two separate organizations, and have maintained an exclusive contractual relationship since inception.  MVMA is the oldest IPA affiliated with MVP.  A participating physician's contract with MVMA enables the physician to be part of MVP’s provider network and provide services for MVP members. 

     Our network physicians are very familiar with what is happening in health care in their specialty and geographic area.  Through the active involvement of many of our physicians, the IPA leadership performs contract negotiation for the entire network, evaluates reimbursement levels in a fiscally responsible manner, and provides extensive input into medical management policies, serving as advocates for our physicians.

MVMA focuses its efforts on physician-to-physician interaction through in-person visits to our network physicians at their office locations with our medical director. 

We understand the nature of busy practices and make the best use of time by bringing out information pertinent to the physician and his or her specialty, and updates regarding MVMA activities.
